Fountain Hill Studio was started by Jonathon Russell in 2014 as a way of continuing to mentor artists and students who want to improve their Craft and Art. Jonathon retired from Grand Rapids Community College in the spring of 2014 after creating and teaching in its photography department for 37 years.
The workshops offered by Fountain Hill Studio will cover aspects of Historical Analog Photography from WetPlate Collodion to Platinum printing and areas in between. The workshops will merge 21st century technology with 19th century photography by teaching the creation of enlarged digital negatives and bringing them into the traditional darkroom.
The following is a list of workshops that will be taught at Fountain Hill Studio through June 2016. A list of workshops for the remainder of 2016 will be posted in late spring.
Prior knowledge is unnecessary for most of the workshops and is suited for anyone with a curiosity and passion for knowledge about historical analog photography. The prerequisites for intermediate and advance workshops are listed under each heading.
Most workshops are limited to an enrollment of five students; this assures ample one-on-one time and will occur over the course of a single weekend. The workshops usually will begin on a Friday evening (6pm – 9pm), all day Saturday (9am – 5pm) and Sunday afternoon (1pm – 4pm).
Fountain Hill Studio is located at 711 Fountain Street, NE, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Fountain Hill Studio may take and use images during the course of the workshops for promotional purposes. If you have an objection to being included in images or videos, please inform us.
Withdrawal from a workshop 14 days before it will start will receive a full refund. Withdrawal closer than two weeks to any workshop will result in the forfeiture of your $50.00 deposit. Any cancelation on the part of Fountain Hill Studio (illness, low enrollment, etc.) a full refund will be issued. Tuition is listed for each workshop and covers equipment, supplies and all chemistry, any exception is noted under each workshop. A $50.00 deposit or payment in full will reserve your spot in a workshop. Until deposit is received or full payment, you will be placed on a waiting list.
We are well versed in many photographic processes. If you don’t see something that you want to learn, please ask. Private group workshops and individual tutorials can be arranged based on your interests.
